“Root: Hanbok” holds a deeply personal meaning for me. A hanbok is traditional Korean clothing. Although it is no longer part of everyday life, it is still worn on special occasions to celebrate important moments and honour our traditions.
As an immigrant woman living in a country with a different culture and language, painting something so closely connected to my memories and experiences feels like putting down roots in a new environment while staying true to who I am.
In this piece, I focused on the details of the hanbok—the patterns, textures, colours, and shapes—rendering them in a more realistic style to highlight both their beauty and their significance.
