This painting was inspired by an emotion I return to from time to time. Even when life is going well, when I’m functioning normally with no obvious problems, I sometimes feel a bit lost, or empty. In those moments, all I want is to curl up like a little ball in my soft, warm bed.
Then I came across some photos of a baby elephant playing near its mother, stumbling and making mistakes the way babies do. Whenever it got hurt, it ran straight back to her for comfort. And that made me think maybe that was what I was looking for too, not exactly a person, but the feeling, the comfort.
So I painted a mother and baby elephant curled together into one soft, round shape, resting safely, warmly, and completely at peace.
